Impending Doom

A pen and ink drawing using a background technique I copied from Craig Thompson's Habibi. Habibi is a really stunning looking book and when I saw this background I knew I would have to have a go myself. It turned out well I think but I'm not sure if I have the patience to ever do it again!

Also, I guess this disconsolate looking fellow is my Christmas blog post, so Merry Christmas!

  1. You know, I've not yet gotten a chance to pick up Habibi, but I've definitely meant to. I've got to say, if this is a technique you picked up from Craig, then this is DEFINITELY something I'm looking forward to seeing more of, either from you, or from him. It's added a lot of great texture, depth, and mood, which I think propels a simple figure study in the the realm of really great and complete piece. This is something that I could definitely see printed, framed, and hanged on a wall with pride-which I hope you see as being a compliment. Definitely, continue experimenting with textural backgrounds... it totally works for you.

  2. Thanks. I'll probably try it again on some smaller comic panels.

I really like Habibi, I guess some of the criticisms of it are right but it's a beautiful and ambitious piece of work.
