The Strongman

I drew this while watching World's Strongest Man.

Pen, ink & watercolour.

Harvesting In The Pines

Giants do most of the work around Christmas, don't believe those Norwegian loggers. I was worried the wash wouldn't work on the cheap paper I used, but it turned out surprisingly well.

Pen, ink and watercolour.

Merry Christmas!

Smoking Cat

Feels a bit of a shame bumping down the comic I worked on for over a month with a drawing of a pipe smoking cat. But on the other hand I'm pleased how this little sketch came out.

A Day In Hell comic

My first ever four page comic! Thats four times longer than anything I've done before.

Pen, Ink and an and elaborate Watercolour process I'm too knackered to go into right now.

Monday, 12 November 2012

Z is for Zorro

For Alphabooks originally written by Johnston McCulley.

Haven't been very good with keeping up with these but I wanted to do one last one. Ink & watercolour.

Sunday, 4 November 2012

A day in hell panel detail

A close up of a panel from a new four page(!) comic I'm working on.

Bracing against the gales

A new pen & ink and watercolour drawing.

Saturday, 13 October 2012

The Drifter

A little ink drawing from the sketchbook. There is something really satisfying about drawing hairs with a nib pen.

Demon designs

Some character designs of a little demon for a possible comic strip. Character designs are the fun part, the difficult bit is doing the actual comic.

Saturday, 6 October 2012

Gab Collab Demon Rider

I turned a watercolour blob into a Demon riding a hell serpent for Gab Collab. Ink, watercolour and gouache for the demon's skin.

Oh I should probably mention my tumblr in a post too, it's almost exactly the same as this site so pick your favourite blogging platform.

Monday, 1 October 2012

A drawing of the Sasquatch loosely based on the Patterson film where Bigs give a cheeky look back at the camera.

Pen, Ink & Watercolour.

The Walk Comic

Probably my longest comic strip yet, and also one of my stupidest.

Pen, Ink & Watercolour.

Monday, 3 September 2012

Catch That Rabbit

Fresh from the sketchbook. Pen & Ink.

The Mushroom

A Pen & Ink and Watercolour drawing.

Monday, 27 August 2012

O is for Oladahn

O is for Oladahn. From The History of The Runestaff by Michael Moorcock.

Another in my sporadic Alphabooks drawings. Oladahn is a character from the slightly cheesy Fantasy series by Michael Moorcock. He's just described as being short and having red fur but I always pictured him as quite simian. Pen, Ink & Watercolour.

Mmmm Gin!

A sketchbook drawing I pencilled in the park. Used a Hunt 108 nib which is a lot more flexible than my usual.

High Visibility Jacket Comic

Try it yourself.

Pen, Ink & Watercolour.

Remake/Remodel: The Olympic Torch

My very late entry to the Remake/remodel on whitechapel. Now the London Olympics are over, the cleanup can begin.

Up and Down Comic

As a great man* once said: "life is a rollercoaster, you just got to ride it"

Pen, Ink and Watercolour.

*Ronan Keating

Wenlock & Mandeville

To celebrate the London Olympics I decided to draw the terrifying mascots Wenlock and Mandeville endulging in their favourite pastime.

Saturday, 21 July 2012

The Slouch

A little sketchbook drawing. Pen & Ink.

Monday, 16 July 2012

I is for Ignatius J. Reilly

Another Alphabooks drawing. It's Ignatius J. Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Really enjoyed drawing this, he is such a fun character to draw.

Saturday, 14 July 2012

Pig Beast & The Kite

I wanted to do a big(by my standards) drawing with watercolour washes on stretched paper, so I revived my popular children's book characters(in my head) Pig Beast & Sheep. Maybe something for the portfolio if I ever get round to doing one.

Monday, 9 July 2012

H is for Hagbard Celine

Hagbard Celine for Alphabooks. Everybody's favourite Laissez-faire capitalist and Submarine Captain from The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.

Sunday, 1 July 2012

Pete the Daft Giant

I fancied doing something in black and white just using a nib for texture.

Monday, 25 June 2012

F is for Ferdinand

A drawing for Alphabooks from The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf. Ferdinand doesn't like to fight in bullfights he just likes to sit and smell the flowers.

Saturday, 16 June 2012

Crisps Comic

A comic about poncey crisps(or chips if you're north american). This is what hand cooking means.

Ink & watercolour.

Monday, 11 June 2012

D is for Doc Daneeka

An entry for the Alphabooks project. Doc Daneeka is from Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.

Doc Daneeka is the doctor that first explains the catch to Yossarian. I've drawn him from a later period in the book when he's starting to doubt his existence.

Ink and Watercolour.

Remake/Remodel: Deep Sea Danny's Iron Fish

A Remake/Remodel of Deep Sea Danny's Iron Fish for Whitechapel.

He was before my time when it comes to Beano characters but I imagine he must have come from wealth to have his own metal attack fish, so I drew him as a drunk posh boy. I also made the Iron Fish more of an Iron Angler Fish.

Friday, 25 May 2012

Hairy Beast

A monster from my sketchbook. Pen & Ink and I coloured it with a fancy graduated watercolour wash.

Monday, 21 May 2012

The Party Cat and Goblin

A drawing of the cat for my Mum's birthday card.
A little pencil and watercolour drawing from my sketchbook.

Try it yourself next time you're in the outback.

Pen, ink and Photoshop.

My experience of free comic book day

A hastily drawn autobiographical cartoon of my experience of free comic book day.

I did eventually manage to pick a couple of free things up, but nothing that good.

Wednesday, 25 April 2012

The Inveterate Internet User

A little drawing I did for something I'm working on. Notice the gnarled and crippled hands from too much computer use.

Wednesday, 18 April 2012

Joke can cartoon

Probably the most mature and thought provoking cartoon I've made so far.

Ink and watercolour.

Monday, 9 April 2012

Z is for Zhu

My final Alphabeast! The Zhu is from ancient chinese beastaries and is a bird with human arms for legs. I wanted to make some elaborate and impressive final drawing, but this was the best beast I could find. Still he's pretty cute.

Cheers to Andrew Neal for running Alphabeasts and all the people who contributed.

Thursday, 5 April 2012

The Heroic Cat

I wanted to do some watercolour painting using washes and the like so I came up with this picture of my cat. I'm not sure why I decided to draw him in this manner, probably watched too much Thundercats when I was little.

Monday, 2 April 2012

Y is for Yara-ma-yha-who

My penultimate Alphabeast is the Yara-ma-yha-who. From Australian aboriginal folklore this creature uses its suckers to drain someones blood, eats them and later "regurgitates the victim, leaving it "shorter" than before".

Monday, 26 March 2012

X is for Xianfu Zhi Yu

A Xianfu Zhi Yu for Alphabeasts. The Xianfu Zhi Yu is a half pig half carp creature from old chinese beastaries, if you eat it, it stops you from vomiting. Sounds delicious.

Lessons in Latin comic

So now you know!

Drawn with pen, ink and watercolour.

Monday, 19 March 2012

W is for Wapaloosie

Alphabeasts is almost over, I think I'm gonna make it!

A Wapaloosie is a tree climbing creature from North American lumberjack folklore.

Pen, ink and black watercolour.

Monday, 12 March 2012

V is for Vadatajs

This weeks alphabeast is a Vadātājs. From Latvian mythology, the Vadātājs appears as a friendly being such as a child or dog and leads its victims toward death.

Drawn in pen and ink.

Monday, 5 March 2012

U is for Uhepono

For Alphabeasts this week I drew a Uhepono. A big-eyed giant from Zuni myth that wears a fur coat.

I had trouble drawing those big eyes, anything other than little ovals or dots for eyes just seems wrong to me! All in pen and ink.

A full and frank discussion about my avatar

This avatar is even older than my poorly thought through artistic pseudonym. So I decided to redraw it:

Drawn in pen and ink and watercolour. Now this is all well and good at this resolution but to make it read better at 100 x 100 px I had to thicken and darken the lines up a little in photoshop:
(I assure you there's a difference) And here it is 100 x 100 complete with transparent background:
The hairy beast represents my creativity and the cape represents my sorrow.
