Luxury Cruise Comic

My longest ever comic, hope you like it. Did it all in pen & ink on bristol board but there was also a lot of photoshop tinkering.

Everyday Survival Tips

A  one hour drawing I did for Off Life's #Quickdraw thing they do on twitter. The theme was "Everyday Survival Tips".
A little sketchbook drawing I painted with watercolour.

Pink Beasty

A little drawing I've been able to make while recovering from RSI. Hoping to get back to the comic I'm working on but it will probably be a few weeks before I can.

Saturday, 28 September 2013

Delicious Weissbeir

I've been having a terrible time with RSI recently so work on my comic strip has stalled. But here is a  sketchbook drawing that probably contributed to my situation.

Goat Creature

Haven't posted for a while so I thought I better post something. This is a little sketchbook creature I drew with the brushpen.

And this is the reason I haven't been posting, my longest comic ever! Eleven whole pages, definitely a "Graphic Novelist" now. It's all been scanned, I'm just working on the borders and neatening it up in photoshop.

Stylites The Faun

I fancied doing a proper watercolour painting so I came up with this little guy. I got some blending medium that stops the paint drying which really helps with these gradiated washes.

Holiday Sketches

A couple of drawings from the sketchbook I while on holiday:

I did some proper plein air watercolour painting, and it didn't turn out so bad. I could have chosen a more interesting composition but that was the most comfortable spot to have a picnic.
I couldn't resist doing an actual cartoon so here is my take on the unreasonably hot weather.

Z is for Zelda

The end of Alphabots is upon us! No this isn't a particularly poor likeness of the game character, it's a take on the creepy martian robot from Terrahawks.

Well Alphabots is finished. We learned Dr Who is a good source of robots with uncommon first letters, that there are not as many robots beginning with X as you would think and that I'm not that great at capturing likenesses.

Monday, 22 July 2013

Y is for Yo-Yo

This alphabot comes from the short lived american sitcom Holmes & Yo-Yo. Holmes gets partnered up with a robot and hilarity ensues!

X is for X-5

I uploaded a blurry phone picture of this Alphabot on monday, but here it is in its glorious scanned form. X-5 is from the cartoon show Atomic Betty, which I have never watched.

Done by the seaside with a Zebra "brush pen"(it's more like a felt tip) and watercolours with a waterbrush.

Monday, 8 July 2013

W is for Walter The Wobot

Only three more Alphabots to go! Walter is the some time comic relief for Judge Dredd in 2000AD. Although sadly I think he's been neglected in recent years.

Monday, 1 July 2013

V is for V.I.N.CENT.

In the home straight of alphabots. V.I.N.CENT. is a robot from live action Disney film The Black Hole  which I have never seen but I do seem to recognise this guy for some reason.

Pen, ink and watercolour.

Monday, 24 June 2013

U is for Ultron

After checking to see if Ultraman was a robot this was the only U alphabot I could think of. Ultron is an anti human robot which keeps on remaking itself and fighting The Avengers.

I enjoyed doing the kirby crackle for his mouth.

Monday, 17 June 2013

T is for T-1000

Thought I'd go for a more obvious Alphabot this week. Apparently they are thinking of having an aging Arnie for Terminator 5(oh joy) but Robert Patrick's liquid metal policeman is my favourite Terminator.

Ink & watercolour and a bit of process white for highlights.

Monday, 10 June 2013

S is for Sir Killalot

This alphabot is a "house robot" from Robot Wars, a game show where people battled their homemade remote controlled robots. From what I remember they never showed who controlled these robots but I imagine they looked like this.

DJ From Hell

An illustration I did for Cab Radio an internet radio station featuring discussion of comedy and wierd music. The demonic DJ is holding up a copy of Soccer Superstar by Jess Conrad as featured in the Top 100 Worst Songs ever on Cab Radio and a truly awful record that I urge you to listen to.

Pen, Ink & Watercolour on slightly disintegrated paper.

Monday, 3 June 2013

R is for Ro-Jaws

Another ABC Warrior for Alphabots. Ro-Jaws is a sewer droid who disposes of human waste in a rather discusting manner.

Monday, 27 May 2013

Q is for Quark

For Alphabots. Quarks are from the old Doctor Who episode "The Dominators". I've never seen it but I liked the design and their funny folding arms.

Thursday, 23 May 2013

The Garden Nymph

A one panel cartoon I drew for my Mum's Birthday. A bit of an in joke as I drew it after the cat repeatedly puked up in the garden.

Monday, 20 May 2013

P is for Pris

Do Alphabots Dream of Electric Sheep? This week it's Pris from Blade Runner.

Wasn't that pleased with this at first, it's tricky trying to draw someone mid cartwheel, but I kind of like it now. It's fun doing a silly version of a serious character.

Monday, 13 May 2013

O is for Osirian Service Robot

Another Doctor Who robot for Alphabots. I don't really watch Doctor Who but it certainly comes in handy when drawing an alphabet of robots.

Osirian Service Robots are from the Doctor Who episode Pyramids of Mars. They may look like Mummies but I assure you they are robots!

Monday, 6 May 2013

N is for Neptr

This weeks Alphabot is Neptr from Adventure Time. This Never-Ending Pie-Throwing Robot was created by Finn to throw pies at Jake.

Monday, 29 April 2013

M is For Mega Man

Oh yes it's that time again. Mega Man from the series of rock hard platform games. I haven't played any Mega Man in ages but I still imagine he speaks like he did in the old Nintendo cartoon series.

Monday, 22 April 2013

L is for L1

Possibly the most exciting Alphabot I've drawn so far! L1 is a service robot from an episode of Colin Baker era Doctor Who. Capturing the Zeitgiest with this one.

Not a big Doctor Who fan but I fancied drawing something boxy although it was difficult to get any personality into something without a face.

Monday, 15 April 2013

K is for Kryten

This Alphabot is from the Sci-Fi Sitcom Red Dwarf which I enjoyed when I was little. He's the ship android and general dogsbody.

Did this one in the sketchbook so it's quite small. Pen & watercolour.

Monday, 8 April 2013

J is for Jed

This Alphabot is taken from the song Jed The Humanoid by Grandaddy.

"Jed had found our booze
and drank every drop
he fizzled and popped,
he rattled and knocked,
and finally he just stopped"

Because he's from a song I had free rein to decide his look, and since he was designed in the kitchen and made from "this and that" I gave him a colander head. I did begin to regret the tiles when I was doing all the inking but in the end I really like the way they turned out.

Monday, 1 April 2013

I is for The Iron Man

From The Iron Man by Ted Hughes for Alphabots. I think everyone of a certain age in the UK had to read this bleak story at school. They changed it to The Iron Giant in USA and also made a film of it, but this is based on the original story.

I tried to get a patina look on the iron using a bit of water and dry brushing a bit, it sort of worked. Ink & Watercolour as usual.

Approaching The Kettle Comic

An autobiographical comic about the foolish thoughts I have.

I was originally gonna make this an exclusive for the minicomic collection of my cartoons I'm making but since I still have a lot of work converting my existing stuff, I thought I may as well post it up here.

Pen & Ink.

Monday, 25 March 2013

H is for Hammerstein

Alphabot time again. This one is of Hammerstein from 2000AD's ABC Warriors. The usual leader of the group.

I decided to make him a little cute Hammerstein as that comes more naturally to me than the much more in proportion and fearsome one in the comics. Ink & watercolours as usual.

Monday, 18 March 2013

G is for GERTY 3000

This is my take on GERTY for alphabots. He's an assistant to Sam in the film Moon. Which is one of the few great Science Fiction films of recent years.

I had to simplify him down quite a bit as I could have gone crazy with all the details and I only started him yesterday. Pen, Ink and Watercolour as usual.

Monday, 11 March 2013

F is for Flotsam

Alphabot time again. This guy is one of the baby robots from the film Batteries Not Included, which I remember being quite good, but maybe I'm just a sucker for schmaltzy films about  little robots.

Drew this one in a bit of a hurry last night, but I think it came out ok. Pen, Ink and Watercolour as usual.

Monday, 4 March 2013

E is for Electric Ant

From The Electric Ant a short story by Philip K. Dick. In it Garson Poole wakes up in hospital after a crash to find he is an android or "Electric Ant". He later discovers that by tampering with the punchtape in his chest cavity he can change his reality.

Pen, Ink and watercolours for Alphabots.

Monday, 25 February 2013

D is for Deadlock

For Alphabots.

Deadlock is from ABC Warriors which appears in 2000AD. He worships the Khaos religion and has a soul sucking sword, which is pretty impressive for a robot.

This one was done in a bit of a rush last night, but didn't come out too bad. There might be some more ABC Warriors turning up later in the alphabet.

Saturday, 23 February 2013

It Came From The Depths and My Father The Weeble

It Came From The Depths. A sketchbook drawing I inked and coloured.
My Father The Weeble. I drew my dad as a Weeble, he appreciated it.

Monday, 18 February 2013

C is for Clamps

The Clamps! From Futurama for Alphabots.

I'm happy with how this one turned out, although I think it's more fun when I'm drawing something from a novel or with a completely different style to my usual stuff.

Watercolour & pen & ink.

Monday, 11 February 2013

B is for Brassneck

Another Alphabot, this one from The Dandy. Even though I was more of a Beano man I vaguely remember this robotic schoolboy from my youth.

Pen, Ink & watercolour.
